English III Honors English III Syllabus 2017-18 Mission Statement This course will focus primarily on seminal texts written by American authors, however, students will also investigate and explore issues that are both relevant to their own lives and important to society as a whole throughout the course of writing the junior research paper. Students will learn to argue effectively, as this is a necessary life skill. Students will read often and write frequently and practice the skills necessary to pass the North Carolina English III Common Exam. English III Requirements: Graduation Project Paper Students will complete a 6-8 page research paper based on a topic of their choice. This paper is a prerequisite for the English IV Graduation Project which includes a product, presentation, and portfolio. A link to the manual detailing the requirements will be provided both on Edmodo and on my website. The paper counts as 20% of the 4th quarter grade. English III Texts Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck Looking for Alaska John Green or The Perks of Being a Wallflower The Crucible Arthur Miller Honors English III Texts Their Eyes Were Watching God Zora Neale Hurston The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald The Other Wes Moore or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks The Crucible Arthur Miller Honors students will need to purchase all texts except for The Crucible (which is in the textbook), and The Other Wes Moore/The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. They can be ordered fairly inexpensively online. If students cannot afford these books, they are available for free online. I will provide links to these texts on edmodo as we read them. Required Materials____________________________________________________________ College ruled notebook for warm-ups Highlighters Blue, Red, and Black Ink Pens Pencils Markers/Colored Pencils Sticky notes Index cards Loose leaf paper Grading Guidelines_________________________________________________________ Grade Scale A – 90 - 100 B – 80 - 89 C – 70 - 79 D – 60 - 69 F – Anything lower than 60 Warm Ups: You will need a spiral notebook for this class only (as you will occasionally turn it in for a grade) that you need to bring to class every single day. Failure to come to class prepared will negatively affect your grade and may be cause for disciplinary action if it is a consistent problem. Work Expectations: I expect all work to be your own. You must take responsibility for your own academic progress (i.e. read what I assigned, do your homework, etc.). Cheating, borrowing others’ ideas, and plagiarism will be dealt with following South Mecklenburg High School policies Work should be turned in on time. This ensures fair and accurate grading. If work is late, you will not receive full credit. Keep in mind that computers malfunction all the time. A printer that is out of ink is not an excuse for not having your work. Do your work in enough time to avoid technological problems affecting your grade. ALWAYS back up your work (google docs is a great way to do this!) Classroom Rules: Be respectful: Treat others as you would like to be treated, listen actively, tolerate different viewpoints, show interest, help those who need it, and practice common courtesy. Be on time: Be in your seats as soon as the bell rings. Turn in any homework to the appropriate drawer before the bell. Be prepared: Make sure you come to class with the required materials. Without them, you jeopardize your opportunity for learning and success. Be responsible: Take responsibility for your actions and accept the consequences for the choices that you make. Food/Drink: No food or drink should be in the classroom. A bottle of water is the only exception. Be sure you fill up your bottle before class, if you fill a water bottle during class, you will have to use one of your limited hall passes. Tardiness and Absences Students who miss more than ten days may fail the class if missed time is not made up. To make up missed days, students must come during tutoring hours or complete additional assignments. If you are late and miss half of class or more, you will be counted absent for that class period. Students who are late to class will be marked tardy and may be given an additional assignment and/or held after class to make up for time lost. Late or Missing Work If you have missed assignments during an absence, you must check online during your own time to find the assignments that you need to make up. These will be listed online at http://edmodo.com/allisonsouthmeck (I will provide the code for your class during the first week of school). You are responsible for finding out what you have missed when you are absent. You will have five days after you return to make up missed work for full credit. You must also schedule any make up quizzes or tests within five days. If work is not handed in on time, you must fill out a late work ticket, staple it to the front of your assignment and receive reduced credit. Late work turned in without a late ticket attached will not be accepted for a grade. Tutoring I will offer tutoring by appointment. Please speak to me to arrange a time if you need additional help. Leaving during class Students will be given four hall passes for each quarter. They are responsible for these passes and they will not be replaced if lost or stolen. Classroom Policies and Procedures *Homework is to be handed in to the appropriate drawer in the homework cart before the tardy bell rings. If an assignment is not in the drawer when the bell rings, it will be considered late and may be subject to point deduction. *Students should remain in their seats until they are dismissed. *Have your writing utensils ready before class starts so that disruptions are kept to a minimum. *You are expected to bring your materials to class every day. *Profanity is not acceptable. You cannot use profanity in the workplace, do not use it here. Excessive use of profanity will result in disciplinary action. *You may not use the restroom the first or last fifteen minutes of class. *Cell phones are to be turned off and put away during class unless otherwise stated. Students will be given one verbal warning. Students who do not follow this policy will be subject to disciplinary procedures. *Students are responsible for bringing their own tissue. I will not provide them for students. I suggest you get a pocket pack of Kleenex and bring them with you when you need them. *Walkways through the classroom must be kept clear because I am a clumsy person and I am often not the only clumsy person in the room. *Students who disrupt class may be asked to step out and will have to wait there until I can find time to speak with them about their behavior. They may also be immediately sent to ISS. Dear Parents and Students, I am looking forward to working with you this semester. We are going to do some amazing things!
